A new bill introduced in the Illinois General Assembly could increase Ameren and ComEd power bills— by $300 million per year!
The bill would add a surcharge on to Illinois electric bills to boost Exelon’s nuclear power plants in the state. All customers would have to pay the charge (which would go into effect in 2016) regardless of their electricity supplier.
Without the charge, Exelon says it may have to close some of its six nuclear plants in the state. But we think that sounds a little fishy coming from the company that has raked in $20 billion in profits over the past decade. Furthermore, nothing in the Exelon bill guarantees that the company will keep the plants open, and so far the ComEd parent company has refused to release details about the financial condition of the plants.
A recent survey showed that 9 out of 10 CUB Action Network members are “very concerned” with this plan. We couldn’t agree more.
