Joyce’s name was randomly selected from a pool of 1,120 other participants after telling CUB which rate-hike battle mattered most to her.
The membership survey—which was administered online— marked the official launch of CUB’s June Consumer Campaign to tackle billions of dollars in rate-hike battles. The following key pocketbook issues were included:
- Fighting ComEd’s $138 million rate hike.
- Analyzing Ameren’s $14 million electric rate cut—to increase it even more.
- Battling Illinois American Water’s $43 million rate hike. (Expert testimony says it should be slashed by at least 60 percent!)
- Improving the Peoples Gas pipe-replacement program to prevent cost overruns, and fight for refunds on any unnecessary or wasteful spending. (We’ve already helped secure a $18.5 million refund package in a related case.)
While a majority of respondents listed ComEd’s rate hike as their number one issue, Joyce ultimately chose the water rate hike—a battle that hit closer to home for her.
