Village Of Steward Wins CUB's 'Bright Future' Award, Earns 550 Money-saving Light Bulbs With Potential Value of $27,500
CHICAGO, June 15, 2009—The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) has presented the Village of Steward with the consumer group’s “Bright Future” award, giving it 550 money-saving Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs to honor its pledge to become more energy efficient.
Steward won the bulbs by taking part in CUB’s “Get Green” Community Giveaway, where residents pledge to use at least one energy-saving CFL in their home. The village was one of 10 Illinois communities with the highest percentage of pledges in 2008, earning a share of 10,000 CFLs, courtesy of CUB. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, and each bulb can save up to $50 over its lifetime. That means the 550 bulbs hold a total potential value of $27,500 in energy savings to Village of Steward residents, who can receive the free CFLs* at:
The Steward Village Hall
402 Main St. Steward *Limit four bulbs per family. Call the Village Hall with questions, at 815-396-2846. “CFLs are great for both your pocketbook and the planet,” said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental programs coordinator. “We’re proud to reward Steward residents for their commitment to energy efficiency. They’re working for a brighter future for the state of Illinois.” In 2008, 18,000 people took the pledge by filling out a form at CUB’s “Get Green” page (at www.CitizensUtilityBoard.org), which has other money-saving tips and instructions on how to dispose of CFLs. The pledge campaign continues in 2009. People who pledge will qualify for drawings to win 50 CFLs or a month of free electricity—and they could help win their community up to 10,000 bulbs. CUB is Illinois’ leading nonprofit utility watchdog organization. Created by the Illinois legislature in 1983, CUB opened its doors a year later to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure refunds over the years.
