CHICAGO, July 27, 2009—The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) will present the town of New Minden with its “Bright Future” award, delivering 400 money-saving Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs to the town to honor its pledge to become more energy efficient.
New Minden won the bulbs by taking part in CUB’s “Get Green” Community Giveaway, where residents pledge to use at least one energy-saving CFL in their home. The town was one of the 10 Illinois communities with the highest percentage of pledges in 2008, earning a share of 10,000 CFLs, courtesy of CUB. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, and each bulb can save up to $50 over its lifetime, which means the total potential value of the bulbs to New Minden residents is $20,000. “CFLs are great for both your pocketbook and the planet,” said Rebecca Devens, CUB’s environmental programs coordinator. “We’re proud to reward New Minden residents for their commitment to energy efficiency. They’ve done their part to ensure a brighter future for the state of Illinois.” New Minden residents who want to use CFLs in their home can pick up free light bulbs at the New Minden Village Hall, 82 E. Front St., New Minden. Bulbs will be distributed two (2) per household on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be available while supplies last. Call 1-618-478-5312 with questions. CUB is Illinois’ leading nonprofit utility watchdog organization. Created by the Illinois legislature in 1983, CUB opened its doors a year later to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CUB has saved consumers more than $10 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure refunds over the years.
